Module 1 · Lesson 1
What is a Google Business Profile?
A Google Business Profile is a free listing that Google shows when someone searches for a business or service near them. If you've ever searched for a plumber, restaurant, or local shop and seen a map with three businesses listed — that's Google Business Profiles in action.
The Map Pack
When someone types "plumber Derby" or "landscaper near me", Google shows a map and three business listings above the regular search results. This is called the Local Pack or Map Pack. It's the most valuable piece of digital real estate for a local business — and it's completely free to appear there.
These listings show your business name, rating, number of reviews, address, hours, and a phone number. A potential customer can call you directly from the search results without ever visiting your website.
What Shows on Your Profile
- Business name, address, phone number
- Opening hours — including special hours for bank holidays
- Photos and videos of your work, team, and premises
- Google Reviews — star rating and written reviews from customers
- Posts — updates, offers, and news you publish yourself
- Services list — what you offer and at what price
- Questions & Answers — customers can ask, you answer
GBP vs Your Website
Your GBP and your website do different jobs. Your GBP is what people see when they search locally — it's fast, visual, and built around trust signals like reviews. Your website is where you tell your full story, show your portfolio, and convert visitors into enquiries.
The two work best together. A GBP without a website limits your ranking potential. A website without a GBP makes you invisible in local search.
