Module 2 · Lesson 1
How To Create a Google Business Profile
Setting up your GBP correctly from the start matters. The choices you make during setup — especially your business name and category — have a direct impact on how Google ranks you. Don't rush this.
Step 1: Go to business.google.com
Sign in with a Google account you'll always have access to. Don't use a personal Gmail you might lose access to — ideally use a business Google account (Google Workspace) or a Gmail account dedicated to the business.
Step 2: Enter Your Business Name
Use your exact legal business name. Do not add keywords to your business name (e.g. "Smith Plumbing | Emergency Plumber Derby" is against Google's guidelines and can get your listing suspended). Just: "Smith Plumbing Ltd" or "Smith Plumbing".
Step 3: Choose Your Business Type
- Local storefront — customers come to you (shop, salon, office)
- Service area business — you go to customers (plumber, landscaper, cleaner)
- Online business — skip this if you're a local service business
If you go to customers, choose "Service area business" and set your coverage area. You don't need to display your home address.
Step 4: Select Your Primary Category
This is the most important decision in your setup. Your primary category tells Google what your business does. We cover this in depth in the next lesson — for now, choose the most accurate category available.
Step 5: Verification
Google needs to verify your business is real. Options include:
- Postcard — a code sent to your address (5–14 days)
- Phone or email — instant if available
- Video call — live verification with a Google agent
- Search Console — instant if your website is already verified
While You Wait for Verification
Don't wait to complete your profile. Fill in everything now — services, description, photos, hours. It all goes live the moment your listing is verified.
