What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is how your website and business get found on Google when people search for the services you offer. Good SEO helps the right people find you β€” without paying for ads.

How SEO Actually Works

When someone searches on Google, websites are listed in an order. The higher you appear, the more people see you, and the more clicks and enquiries you get.

SEO is the process of improving your website so Google understands what you do and trusts your site enough to show it higher in the results.

Google's algorithm looks at hundreds of factors to decide which websites deserve to rank at the top. But most of them fall into three main buckets:

1. Relevance β€” Does your website clearly show what you do? If someone searches "plumber in Derby" and your website says "plumber in Derby" with good content about plumbing in Derby, Google can connect the two.

2. Authority β€” Does Google trust you? Authority comes from backlinks (other websites linking to yours), reviews, citations, and how long you've been active online.

3. Experience β€” Is your website fast, mobile-friendly, and easy to use? Google rewards websites that give users a good experience.

Why SEO Matters for UK Service Businesses

Think about the last time you needed a service. You probably Googled something like "electrician near me" or "web designer in Nottingham." Most people do the same.

If your business doesn't show up in those results, you're invisible to potential customers who are actively searching for what you offer β€” right now.

Be honest… have you ever gone to page 2 on Google? Most people don't even get past the first three results. That's why SEO matters β€” it moves your website up so more people see it, click through, and enquire.

The difference between position 1 and position 10 isn't just a few extra visits. Studies consistently show that the first result gets around 28–30% of all clicks for a search. By position 10, you're down to around 2%. If you're on page 2, it's essentially zero.

The Three Types of SEO

There are three main areas of SEO you need to understand:

On-Page SEO

This is everything you can control directly on your own website. It includes:

  • Title tags β€” The headline Google shows in search results for each of your pages
  • Meta descriptions β€” The short summary underneath the title in search results
  • Heading structure β€” How your content is organised with H1, H2, and H3 headings
  • Page content β€” Whether your pages actually say what you want to rank for
  • Internal linking β€” How your pages link to each other

On-page SEO tells Google what each page on your site is about and who it should show it to.

Off-Page SEO

This covers everything that happens outside your website that influences how Google ranks you. The main element is backlinks β€” when other websites link to yours, it signals to Google that your site is trustworthy and relevant.

Other off-page factors include:

  • Google Business Profile β€” Your listing on Google Maps is a powerful local SEO signal
  • Citations β€” Mentions of your business name, address, and phone number across the web
  • Google reviews β€” Quantity, recency, and rating all affect how you rank in local search

Technical SEO

This is the behind-the-scenes stuff β€” making sure Google can properly crawl and understand your site. It includes:

  • Site speed β€” Slow pages rank lower and lose visitors
  • Mobile-friendliness β€” Most searches now happen on mobile
  • Sitemap β€” A file that tells Google all the pages on your site
  • Canonical tags β€” Preventing duplicate content issues

How Long Does SEO Take?

SEO isn't instant. Unlike paid ads which show results immediately, SEO typically takes 3–6 months to see meaningful movement and 6–12 months to see strong, consistent results.

This puts a lot of businesses off β€” but it's also one of SEO's biggest advantages. Once you're ranking, you're getting traffic without paying per click. The results compound over time. And a business that's been doing SEO consistently for 12 months is in a position that's very hard for late starters to catch up to.

Local SEO vs Traditional SEO

If you're a service business operating in a specific area β€” a plumber in Manchester, a landscaper in Derby, a web designer in Nottingham β€” local SEO is what you need most.

Local SEO is optimised to help you appear in:

  • Google Maps results (the Map Pack β€” the three businesses that appear with a map at the top)
  • "Near me" searches β€” e.g. "web designer near me"
  • Location-based searches β€” e.g. "SEO agency Mansfield"

Traditional SEO focuses more on national or international search visibility, and is more relevant for e-commerce sites or businesses with no geographic restriction.

For most UK tradespeople and service businesses, local SEO delivers the most direct return.

What Makes a Good SEO Strategy?

A solid SEO strategy for a UK service business typically includes:

  1. Keyword research β€” Finding exactly what your customers search for
  2. On-page optimisation β€” Making sure every key page targets the right keywords
  3. Google Business Profile β€” Set up properly, kept active, with consistent reviews
  4. Content creation β€” Blog posts, service pages, and location pages that answer real questions
  5. Link building β€” Getting mentions and links from relevant, trusted websites
  6. Technical health β€” A fast, mobile-friendly site that Google can crawl correctly

None of these things work in isolation. The businesses that rank consistently do all of them β€” consistently.

The Bottom Line

SEO is how you build a sustainable pipeline of enquiries from Google without paying for every single click. It takes time to build, but once it's working, it's one of the most cost-effective marketing channels available.

If you're a UK service business and you're not showing up on Google, you're leaving a significant amount of business on the table.
